We are currently going through a technological revolution that is rapidly changing the world. Almost every aspect of our lives has been impacted by the introduction of new technologies. Do you check your phone first thing in the morning? Do you use social media to interact with people from all over the world? Do you talk to Alexa or Siri? These are just some examples of how we live in constant interaction with technology.

This revolution doesn’t look like it’s going to stop anytime soon. In fact, it keeps surprising us with new findings and advances almost every day. One of the latest, most revolutionary inventions has been the creation of artificial intelligence. This new technology may have its positive and negative impacts, but what is certain is that with change also comes doubt and fear. Will artificial intelligence take over or significantly change our jobs?

The State of Digital Publishing has defined artificial intelligence (AI) as “the ability of machines to imitate human skills.” However, it’s important to keep in mind that these machines have been created to support us and make our jobs and lives easier, not to take over our roles.

AI has already started claiming its place in the publishing industry, but it has a long way to go compared to other sectors that have already implemented this revolutionary technology. Although expensive at first, this new application can be very useful in helping digitize processes within the book chain and collecting data about different topics.

As the State of Digital Publishing mentions, the current and possible future use of AI in the workplace within publishing includes things like revising and studying manuscripts, translating books, researching trends in the market, and personalizing newsletters.

In terms of revising manuscripts, these machines can automatically identify plagiarized content, apply fact-checking procedures, check copyright infringements, and identify problems with structure and grammar. By deeply studying the manuscript, AI is also able to identify comp titles, automatically apply metadata tagging, and recognize possible audiences for a book.

Apart from working on an original manuscript, these kinds of machines can also help translate manuscripts in instances where the translation needs to be completed quickly. AI has great potential in translating manuscripts, but the results still need to be proofread by a human translator.

AI can also be used to analyze different surroundings, such as researching market trends. It can also be used to analyze data about different topics that affect the publishing industry, such as sales and bestsellers. These programs can even help study the interests of the readers and help prepare specific content for every person who subscribes to the newsletter.

AI can also be helpful in carrying out research about the industry. While it can quickly analyze data to support ideas, it can also be trained to identify certain kinds of books, trends, and advances. For example, if a program were trained to analyze the language used in books, it could automatically identify genres, audiences, and even bestsellers with only a glance at the manuscript.

Many industries are already implementing AI into their work chain, so why should the publishing industry not take advantage of these advances too? Artificial intelligence is a powerful tool that brings a lot of benefits if it is used smartly. We should promote this technology to encourage the publishing of the future. What are you waiting for?
